Enabling Coal to be Used as a Low-Carbon Fuel
For coal to have a long-term future it needs to be utilised as a low-carbon fuel.
Coal, with more than 200 years of known reserves, is one of the most plentiful hydrocarbon energy resources on the planet and also one of the cheapest. However, when combusted in conventional coal-fired power stations, coal releases harmful pollutants such as nitrous and sulphurous oxides as well as enormous volumes of carbon dioxide.
This provides a challenge for many coal-rich/oil-poor nations such as China and India as they have to carefully balance their requirement for energy security with their international commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Jade is commercialising clean coal technologies that include underground coal gasification (UCG) and carbon capture and storage (CCS) that when combined, enable coal to be used as a low-carbon fuel. Our technology safely converts coal into a clean gas that can be used to generate electricity through a gas-fired power station or fuel cells. The gas can also be converted into liquid fuels for transportation applications.
We offer governments a genuine alternative clean energy solution that enables them to safely utilise their internal coal resources rather than turn to unproven and expensive renewable energy technologies or nuclear power.
Jade's technology is scalable enough to decarbonise a country's entire coal industry:
more cost effective than conventional coal mining and coal-fired power plants
safer than mining as no one goes under ground
improves air quality as nitrous (NOx) and sulphurous (SOx) oxides are captured at source
significantly reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions
