Underground Coal Gasification (UCG)
A process of extracting the energy value from coal without mining it. Instead the coal is gasified in-situ at high temperature and then extracted as a hydrogen and methane rich gas known as syngas.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
The process of capturing and compressing greenhouse gas pollution from coal or gas power plants, and storing it underground in suitable geological formation.
Gas to Liquid (GtL)
This is a refinery process to convert syngas or other gaseous hydrocarbons into longer-chain hydrocarbons such as gasoline or diesel fuel.
Coal Methane (CBM and VAM)
CBM is found in coal deposits and is held in place by underground water pressure. Frequently CBM is found in coal fields being evaluated for UCG.
