Process
Underground Coal Gasification is the process of extracting the energy value from coal without mining it – instead the coal is gasified in situ at high temperature and then extracted as a hydrogen and methane rich gas known as syngas (synthesis gas)
Input
Oxygen-rich air and solvents are blown underground through an injection well into the UCG reactor chambers.
UCG Reactor
A controlled combustion of some of the coal inside the reactor chamber heats the surrounding coal to a temperature so that it partially oxidises or gasifies to create a synthesis gas that includes hydrogen and methane.
Output
The hot synthesis gas ("syngas") rises to the surface through the production well.
Gas Cleaning
The syngas is cooled and cleaned at the surface, and prepared for its' next application.
Benefits
Safer than mining
Lower-carbon footprint than conventional coal combustion
Cleaner air - reduced Sulphur Oxides (SOx) and Nitrous Oxides (NOx)
Proven technology
Cost competitive with conventional coal mining
