Reduced Emissions
Underground Coal Gasification ("UCG") reduces harmful emissions and the carbon footprint of coal when used for electricity production.
Electricity Production
A syngas fuelled Combined Cycle Gas Plant (CCGP) produces electricity with a +20% carbon saving compared with conventional coal-fired power stations.
Carbon Capture and Storage ("CCS")
Carbon-rich flue gases from a CCGP plant can be captured and stored leading to a 60~70% CO
2 reduction.
The captured flue gases containing carbon dioxide can be safely stored underground in the cavities created by the UCG process:
Spent reactor chambers create storage space for carbon dioxide
Below 700m carbon dioxide is stored as a liquid
Surrounding coal is ideal for trapping carbon dioxide for a long period of time
- +20% carbon saving from UCG
- ~70% carbon saving with CSS
- Reduced sulphur dioxide and other sulphur oxides (SOx)
- Reduced nitrogen oxides (NOx)
